This is a new painting but as you can see it has many layers and was worked on over a much longer period of time. Last week it looked very different. Since I don’t edit what appears before me I never know what my next artwork will be. That way it is always fresh, spontaneous, and keeps me wondering too.
The painting began when a friend gave me some stretched canvas prints she did not want so I began transforming them. The Blue River Red found itself.
What resulted reminds me of a group of paintings I did in the late 80’s called The New York Series. Here is one from that series hanging on a wall. It is 5 x 7 feet. They were colourful minimal abstract works with names like Bleecker Street Blues or maybe Broadway Boogie (thanks Mondrian). They were all done just before moving to live permanently in New York for 15 years.
Over time all my work does link up thematically and stylistically even though it does not appear to at times.
