This post introduces you to one of Australia’s most famous painters……Brett Whiteley
Brett Whiteley, AO (7 April 1939 – 15 June 1992) He is one of Australia’s most revered artists. His lyrical expressionism and lack of inhibition placed him at the forefront of Australia’s avant-garde art movement. He won many prizes and awards and his work hangs in numerous galleries, including the National Gallery in Canberra, the Tate Gallery in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
He had many shows in his career, and lived and painted extensively in Italy, England, Fiji and the United States.

In the seventies I lived just across the bay from Brett’s Lavender Bay home……where he painted the image above.
Since his death (age 53 years) his studio has been turned into a museum which is a popular place to visit in Sydney.

This is a great way to learn about Australian art, of which I’m quite ignorant. Thanks!
Thanks Tom…….Australian artists/painters have little mention in world art. I will show you a few more.
Stupendo!
Thank you , Burgessart!
La ringrazio tantissimo!!!!
Che Italiano perfetto!
Complimenti!
di niente!
53 is too young to die – what a loss of a master painter. Lavender Bay blows me away – absolutely gorgeous work. Thanks for sharing Robert…
Actually he lived longer than he expected John. He stated he believed he would die at 48 years. Brett was heavy into drugs and died of an overdose. He somehow managed them well enough….. openly stating that they helped his art and that was why he took them. It did however destroy his personal life. Tragic hero might describe him.
