Here is a recent Self Portrait engulfed by my surroundings. This however really captures my feelings and beliefs of our existence. We are one with all!

Here is a Self Portrait which is obviously inspired by Picasso’s Cubism. It reveals a smaller eye looking out to the world but completely overshadowed by a much larger eye which encompasses the Universe.

What can I say about this! Traditionally self portraits aim to reveal aspects of a persons self. The rest I will leave up to you to see what this means to you.

Here are a couple of photos from a new series of photographs I called The Rothko Photos.
Two large fully illustrated Rothko books came my way recently and I decided to go through them again.
How Rothko’s work evolved always fascinated me……….. a bit like Mondrian.
For those who do not know Mark Rothko he was a Russian/American painter. He is classified as an abstract expressionist, although he himself rejected this label.
His recognition in the artwork is proven by the sales of his art. In May 2012 Rothko’s 1961 painting Orange, Red. Yellow was sold by Christie’s, New York, for US$ 86.9 million, setting a new record for post-war paintings.
The spiritual foundation and content of his art is proven with the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas.
Anyway, I was sitting reading his books when suddenly this series of photos emerged.

Here’s a new self portrait charcoal drawing. It measure 24 x 32 inches.
I decided to do it as Self Portraiture is a major theme of fine art and for some reason I thought it was about time to do another. I occasionally do them.
Many artists have focused on Self Portraits because you are always available to pose.
How we look to others and how we look to ourselves can be quite different. As an artist you can capture something the camera cannot.
Some of my students have made portraits of me which seem to show different parts of my of character and inner nature. Drawings (or paintings) can reveal parts of us we find hard to put into words.
What do you think?
