Here are some photographs I took as a passenger on the return drive from the gallery visit earlier in the week.
I have made no effort to make them “perfect” and you see them with window reflections etc.
In fact I love imperfections…….they are what make things real.

On Wednesday I was visiting a gallery in the country and stopped in for coffee on the way back.
Every ready with my camera I filmed this amazing performance of two people I did not know at the time. Just my intuition told me it was something very special!
William Barton and his mother….Aunty Delmae Barton are both internationally acclaimed performers and they just happened to be visiting this place…… “Bush Tucker” which has a big barn at the rear where people perform. They are also here on the Gold Coast because they are being engaged for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Delmae wrote the poem she read here on Tuesday so this is a world exclusive performance.
Remember the Australian Aboriginal People have lived here continually for more than 60,000 years long before many/most/all civilizations.
Therefore the didgeridoo reflects that very ancient, primitive and primordial sound.

When I first visited Paris I was on a bus tour and was asking many questions.
The female tour guide singled me out on the bus full of people
and approached with a similar look in her eyes.
Then in a very french way said……..
Title : Are You In Love With Me Sir?
The bus roared with laughter!

and always remember
The greatest painting is still to be painted
The greatest artwork is still to be made
The greatest photograph is still to be taken
The greatest book is still to be written
The greatest love is still to be expressed

This is a Reblog of The Journey……No 10 originally posted June 24th 2012.
It seemed like eternity as I fell.
My life flashed before me……. I demanded I can’t die now. I have not done what I set out to do.
Then SPLASH….I hit water. It was warm as I sank below the surface.
I opened my eyes and found I was immersed in a purple sea with suggestions of red rocks appearing far below.
Quickly running out of air I was amazed to find I could breathe. This liquid was not like anything I had ever known before.
I could turn freely, and breathe easily and still be supported. More like colored air which behaved like water.
This was something completely new.
Each step of my journey was changing my previously held beliefs…. now anything was possible!
As I tried to take all this in I was jolted by another awesome vision …..
a huge multi colored, patterned sphere appeared…

UPDATE: The twelve items were identified allowing the doors to opens.
You are welcome to add more if you see them.
No sooner was I inside the truncated pyramid when I found myself contained in a small tomb-like room where I could hardly move.
It was just high enough to stand up and turn around with arms extended.
I managed to light a match which revealed another rock surface full of symbolism.
I was able to see what looked like a snake, a helicopter, a falling man and the initials…. j a l or j a i.
Then I looked down and discovered a piece of parchment with the following inscription ……….
…..when you find twelve objects on the wall the doors will open and you can proceed.
At that moment my match went out and I sat in the dark wondering what to do.
The hours went by….then I decided… I NEED YOUR HELP!
Can you search the surface to find the 12 objects I need.
I am desperate…

Yesterday I had to drive back to the Tweed Heads Regional Art Gallery where my painting had been on show for the last month. This time I drove through another picturesque inland route instead of the coastal route of the previous journey.
This image is a classic Australian bush scene with cattle below a tall Gum tree.
Had to stop at this colorfully marked roadside…….store.
Picked up my art and returned home by the river/coastal route.
My original trip was the posting below

The Sugar Bowl Cloud Watchers were at it again recently and they got me thinking…..
One thing for sure in this world is we are all different…..
with different dreams, different things that make us happy.
Imagine a world where we all wanted to be the same…… Astronauts, Artists, Accountants or whatever.
The world would never function.
So,………..just maybe….it has been designed to be perfect just as it is.
Just a thought…..
More Sugar Bowl Cloud Watchers….

Yesterday I had to deliver artworks to the Tweed River Art Gallery…….about 40 minutes drive from the Chateau. The Tweed River area is one of the most beautiful regions in Australia. The photo at the top of the page shows how the road winds along next to the Tweed River and shows Mt Warning off in the distance. The Gallery is located near a place called Murwillumbah which is close to the NSW and Queensland boarders.
Murwillumbah which has a small population of only 8,000, sits on the south eastern foothills of the McPherson Range in the Tweed Valley. The area is hilly. Many of the buildings in the Town are Art Deco in style and there are cafes, clothes and antique shops. Murwillumbah was nominated one of the top ten sea/tree change towns in Australia.
The area is used for filming of the British reality series, I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, and has been since 2002. Versions of the show for other countries are also produced in the area.
The major industry, apart from tourism, is sugarcane growing. There is also some dairy farming and many alternative lifestyle retreats nearby, notably one belonging to the Hare Krishna religion.
I have always had a special fondness for this area and as a friend said recently…….it seems to have a strong spiritual energy there.
I don’t know how to begin……….. you won’t believe me anyway.
Still here goes.
I’m walking along and I see this sign. Impossible to read …….. at first. So rubbing my eyes I step back and take another look.
Here’s what I see this time.
With my eyes still fuzzy I look again. You won’t believe what I saw this time. Nobody will.
Shocked I stood stunned! Then after a few minutes I thought …….. forget it. Nobody will believe you so don’t even try.
But at least we now KNOW THE TRUTH ………. and that is all that matters!

Another perfect day on the Gold Coast
Did you hear about it in the News? No?
Well I guess it must have landed safely ….
at the busy Coolangatta Airport.
What about your flying experiences? What are your best and worst landings?

Those amazing Sugar Bowl Cloud Watchers of Nerang were seen again today and this time talkin’ to each other. They did not say much in the 3 hours they were observed looking at clouds but it was profound…..well interesting….. well…….?
We now know they can speak and one of them would rather stare at clouds then be an artist.
I’m wondering why they cannot look at clouds and be an artist like the Great Artist John Constable?.
Also, they do look like twins but looks can be deceiving…….especially if you are……. an artist.
Funny how as an artist we learns to SEE the world how it is…. then we make the world how WE see it.
Please don’t tell anybody about the Sugar Bowl Cloud Watchers of Nerang. It is best we keep them a secret at least for now.
Or if you love clouds so much and have kept it a secret until now why not join The Cloud Appreciation Society at (it looks like great fun!)

Finally here’s a thought : IF ENOUGH PEOPLE WATCHED CLOUDS THERE WOULD BE NO WAR OR CRIME.

Could this be a perfect view from the mountain (Mt Tamborine) over looking the Gold Coast which I featured in another recent post https://burgessart.wordpress.com/2012/09/02/from-here-to-there/
The image above offers another even more perfect view….perfect symmetry. This view I created myself. A great place to meditate.
Here we are looking from a point much further south.
Much of the mountain is covered in rainforests. There are rustic shops and places to stay all over the mountain. Bush walking and hand gliding, wineries and lots more. A very popular place to visit.
Found this fun YouTube short video about a trip to Mt Tamborine which you might like.

Winter in New York can be very cold ………. as these two photos show.
Growing up in Australia I had never seen snow until I experienced a NY winter storm. I loved it. Everything about it. How snow falls and pockets in areas. All goes quiet. Most people stay indoors. Not me. I had to experience all of it. Central Park just after fresh snow is a real wonderland. Motor vehicles become lost. And there is nothing like going inside after being out in blizzard conditions.
To locals it is another inconvenient storm which makes it difficult to get around. To me a visual and emotional experience like no other. The big white neutralizes all colors and sounds. An eerie peace descends upon city that never sleeps and never quietens …….except in a big storm. It is magic to me. How Nature quietens the big beast.
Ahhh! Nothing like a big snow storm in the Big Apple.
And when the snow begins to melt…………that is another story.

These are flowers I met on my morning walk and who said they wanted to be photographed and shared with the world. With such beauty I had to agree. Unfortunately I did not get their names so if you recognize them please add a comment.
The morning walk is often the inspiration for many photographs. It is an endless source of discovery and amazement. I have even made three videos/movies and taken hundreds, maybe thousands of photos.
Now I have just visited YouTube and noticed one of my Morning Walks movies. I will share it here too. It is a very uptempo fast moving movie unlike most of my others. The song refers to the boy from New York City which is myself. I was told that I was a New Yorker after living there for 7 years even though I ended up living there for 15 years.
I hope you enjoy my Morning Walks as much as I do.

“I do not seek. I find.”

“I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

This is another photo manipulation artwork where I have just begun and let the process guide and influence my direction. Picasso’s two quotes above describe it best.

Well if you have been wondering what The Gold Coast looks like then here is a pic which gives you a good idea. This truck is delivering beer, wine and spirits to a local business and I had to photo the banner.
You can see all the highrise along the ocean (Pacific) and the hinterland and mountains in the distance (where the Chateau is located). So if you love all things water…surfing, boating, swimming, fishing, diving, whale watching just to mention a few the Coast has it. Or if you prefer mountains, rainforests, bush walks, etc. then the hinterland and mountains will suit.
The Gold Coast will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Not a bad place to visit.
Upon returning to Australia from New York I wanted somewhere that reminded me of NY (the highrise) but was much more laid back. This place fits the bill.
Another closer view is of Main Beach below. I had many long walks along this beach both morning and late afternoon. Magnificent!
Like everything in life there is a drawback. Just can’t think what it is.
Still, no place is like New York.

Meet Princess and Ewok. Guess you can work out who’s who. They are currently staying at the Chateau and are excellent guests and it is a pleasure to have them. Both are kind, friendly and very loving and currently enjoying the morning sun. With a face to melt the hardest heart they are so endearing and bring constant joy every moment of the day.
It is cold here at present although the days warm up. Nothing like a New York winter. Never snow and cold means 9 C or 50 F. Everything is relative in life and that seems cold after normal daily temperatures around 20 C or 70 F.
Here is another photo of a scene from a shopping center on the Coast.
While shopping you can have a break and sit and watch the passing boats etc. Some people even park their boats to do their shopping. The Chateau is closer to the mountains which you can just see in the distance in the center of the photo. Very, very, very different to New York.
Here is a little local trivia which you might find interesting.
New painting. Title : “Two Miles to Heaven and Hell is Not in Sight”
Maybe the Heaven and Hell series has just begun.
Guess this one does not look much like approaching heaven. But since I have not been there I do not know. Maybe it is approaching Jackson Pollock’s Heaven? All I know is this painting emerged and the title was presented to me. It may still change. My art is ALWAYS CHANGING. So keep posted and see what happens. (it just changed)
Don’t ask why I posted the following. Things can just burst forth. I believe in honoring and trusting our creative spirit…..the Divine within. Sometimes it may not seem to make sense at the moment (of creation) but it becomes clear over time. Some call it a hunch, gut reaction, intuition, Divine guidance, Higher Self. It does not matter. All that matters is you listen to and obey it. It will not harm anybody because it comes from a source of pure LOVE and therefore should be embraced. It knows only Truth and as it is said………the truth will set you free (it might just seem to take a while).
“Crisp as a doughnut. Small as a flea.
This painting tells you …….a lot about me.”
So I guess it could be called
” Two Miles to Heaven and Hell is Not in Sight – A Self Portrait”
But as someone once said….
What’s in a name? That which we call a painting
By any other name would still just look like paint. (Thanks Shakespeare)
Now back to the studio to find……. Heaven! (Hell is not in sight)

In my recent blog Portrait of a Beautiful Girl a very insightful blogger posted the following comment ……….(thanks again John)
“Raw, immediate and courageously gestural – I can’t stop looking at this drawing…”
In replying to his comment it prompted me to think about what is beauty.
“You’re right to add courageously. I am reluctant to show such images as many will be shocked by them…including myself. But, as you know, as artists we must be true to whatever comes from within.
My way of understanding this is to think of a beautiful tree with colorful blossoms and elegant foliage for all to see. Below is an intricate roots system which to many may be considered ugly compared to what is above. But it is only our perception of beauty. It is all the same tree and and must be loved and appreciated as such.
All beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
Below is a painting Under the Jacaranda 1903 by R. Godfrey Rivers Queensland Art Gallery Australia
Further thoughts : We are all made up of many parts…some regarded as beautiful and others….well not so. But that is our perception based on what we have learnt – IT CAN CHANGE if we are open to it.
Different cultures have distinct ideas about what is beautiful and it can change over time.
Life is about CHANGE and the way we see the world……….the way we see and “feel” beauty!
Any comments welcome.

In this painting I have tried to blur the line between realism and abstraction. There are rowers and reflections. Movement across water and energy everywhere. Hope you can see the rowers but more importantly ….feel them rowing.
This painting is my entry in the 2012 Gainsborough Greens Art Awards
UPDATE : August 2012
This entry was not accepted to be included in the competition. In fact unlike last year where all my students and myself were included this year none of us were.
I find that a little bit weird. I was particularly upset for my students who had put forward several very fine works.
Local art competitions can be like that. I am not know in the local area and reminded that even The Impressionist were rejected by the French Academy when they tried to exhibit there.

When I awoke I found myself on another plateau.
Nothing in sight in all directions. But it did not matter. I was different now……somehow.
All my fears had gone. I only felt….JOY!
Why? What had happened to me?
I could not remember anything except for an overpowering thought…….
“EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS WITHIN YOU.”
This seemed to give me peace in a way I had NEVER known.
Then I asked myself …what do I need now? Answer…..I need to leave this place.
So I sat down feeling relaxed and at peace.
A little while later I heard a dull sound in the distance. It was a huge red balloon coming towards me.
And so ended my magnificent journey.
The ending of this journey was indeed……. a New Beginning……. IN EVERY WAY!
Should you wish to start the journey from the beginning please go to
Discovery – A Journey Into the Unknown – JNo1
About The Journey…… this is an actual journey I am experiencing right now. It began with a painting and I have no idea where it might be leading. The discoveries I am making are REAL but they are coming from my artworks. These are all new artworks and they are REALLY amazing me …. I hope you are enjoying them too.
