Here is a very rough video preview of a new painting. It’s all about “feelings” and I hope it is transmitted to you.
I have always felt Art is a living thing….. or should be. It should make us feel more alive. Elevate our spirits. Make our hearts race.

I’m finally able to pay homage to this Great Artist J. M. W. Turner in a positive modern way with my art.
The title reflects his reported final words…. “The Sun is God”
It is also an update on yesterdays post.

Another new photograph. For some reason it reminds me of theatre where the people move slowly and speak, sing or call to each other.

On Wednesday I was visiting a gallery in the country and stopped in for coffee on the way back.
Every ready with my camera I filmed this amazing performance of two people I did not know at the time. Just my intuition told me it was something very special!
William Barton and his mother….Aunty Delmae Barton are both internationally acclaimed performers and they just happened to be visiting this place…… “Bush Tucker” which has a big barn at the rear where people perform. They are also here on the Gold Coast because they are being engaged for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Delmae wrote the poem she read here on Tuesday so this is a world exclusive performance.
Remember the Australian Aboriginal People have lived here continually for more than 60,000 years long before many/most/all civilizations.
Therefore the didgeridoo reflects that very ancient, primitive and primordial sound.

As you may be aware I have been wanting to include YOU in my art.
Well here is another attempt only this time you can join me on my morning ride.
You are SEEING my vision as I pedal along inside Glennon Park and if you keep your eyes open….
you will see…..
some of the School for Ibis members,
the Smokers Only area,
The Tree That Scored a Goal
Also note the description on YouTube
Here is the first attempt by artist R J Burgess at MOVING image making of Fine Art Proportions.
With just a hand-held camera and riding his pushbike here is his Cinematic Debut.
Critics may call it ground-breaking, an epic, a masterpiece or they might call it……..
You can decide for yourself……….I need to get back to MAKING ART!

This is a short movie titled …..”The River – Rapids”
Whilst I was riding this morning I came to this lovely part of the river and decided to set myself the task of
…..making a movie, editing it, and posting it here for you.
The above….made with my mobile phone and unedited…. is the result of all that…..
and I hope… for a brief moment…you can share this special place with me.
I wanted to include the intense sounds created by the birds and bubbling water.

I set out to get some drip photos but after more than 100 they did not seem to be giving me what I wanted
So I decided to make a movie
Here it is…….. another short art movie.
Many of my movies are inspired by Andy Warhol’s….. but not as long.

I know this looks like a small piece of………charcoal. But…. it’s much more than that……
It’s The Fastest Charcoal in the World! Well it would have been.
It was going to be the lead character in a movie made a few years ago. The movie was the amazing story of how an Australian unknown piece of charcoal wanted to be the fastest charcoal in the world. So it went to the USA to the world famous Bonneville Salt Flats and under great difficulty and against all odds became the fastest charcoal in the world.
As you can see this was going to be a story of great inspiration, drama, emotion and achievement but for one thing……….it had no human interest.
So at the last moment the producers changed the story to a New Zealand bloke called Burt Munroe who developed a motor bike called the Greatest Indian and got a famous British actor Anthony Hopkins to pull in the viewers.
The movie was a big success ……..but nothing like the original far more exciting story of The Fastest Charcoal in the World.
I’m not promoting the movie but here is a trailer on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jW61Qiko4sg
or the IMDb review here
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412080/
Just remember how much better the story would have been with the original casting.
Must admit………..it still is a real good movie.

These are flowers I met on my morning walk and who said they wanted to be photographed and shared with the world. With such beauty I had to agree. Unfortunately I did not get their names so if you recognize them please add a comment.
The morning walk is often the inspiration for many photographs. It is an endless source of discovery and amazement. I have even made three videos/movies and taken hundreds, maybe thousands of photos.
Now I have just visited YouTube and noticed one of my Morning Walks movies. I will share it here too. It is a very uptempo fast moving movie unlike most of my others. The song refers to the boy from New York City which is myself. I was told that I was a New Yorker after living there for 7 years even though I ended up living there for 15 years.
I hope you enjoy my Morning Walks as much as I do.

One of our two little visitors Ewok (https://burgessart.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/two-little-visitors/) often sits at the window looking out at the world. A very good Magpie friend often drops by the Chateau for some food such as oats, nuts etc., and occasionally croissant (he unexpectedly grabbed one off the table one day).
The Magpie is quite large at present as he is feeding new chicks which should arrive any day. Our little visitor will continue to see the family from inside the Chateau….not outside. When he sees the smaller birds he gets very excited and would love to get out amongst them. The magpie is just too big and for some reason he seems fascinated by him or…… could this be love?
There is never a dull moment at the Chateau. Lots of locals drop in for food.
If you look closely you will see an amorous visitor at the top left of the photo. These colourful parrots are fun to watch as they hop across the ground. I made a movie of this event with a Bob Dylan song as the soundtrack. Would love to put it on YouTube and here but wonder about the copyright issues of the Dylan song (Ain’t Talkin’). Anyone out there that can add some advice?
Will keep you posted if and when the magpie chicks arrive.
Here is the first movie I made sometime ago. It is titled
Still Life – The Movie
As you will see my still life is not traditional and some might notice that several items appear in another later post referring to a magic box.
The original sound tack was different but when I released it on Youtube there was a copyright issue so I used this one. I do have other movies/videos that I have the same problem with i.e. choose the perfect sound to suit the images but then have to select a generic sound track for copyright reasons. As an artist I appreciate copyright however I would think that anything that promotes the song or music would be good for the artist……..but that is another issue.
Have made about 8 in all. I was deeply moved by a Bill Viola slow motion movie some time ago. Also Julian Schnarbel’s Basquiat movie. Mine is a poor attempt compared to those but you need to start somewhere and it was FUN. Guess mine relates more to Andy Warhol’s.
Hope you enjoy it.
Computers are amazing. How fortunate we are as artists to have them. Leonardo Da Vinci would have loved one. With this work I thank my computer for creating it. My contribution was minimal.
So when I saw the result I was surprised and had to call it ……..the obvious…. “Look What I Saw.”
Anyway for me this is what I call relaxation. Having fun. Light relief. Exploring the possibilities of this fabulous new invention. I remember a comment by the American artist Jasper Johns. Take something … change it….then change it again.
If it effects you please tell me.

This is a photo montage I did last year. The title “Welcome” comes from the obvious doormat and the chance happening of a mother and child stepping into a bus and being welcomed by the driver.
The setting is the front room of a house with the wall dissolved so you can see what is happening outside as well as inside. It is all put together with my often used grid construction. Many hours of work went into the making of the image.
Since my art is about seeing the world in a new way this image seems to do this.
Wonder if the word welcome came from ……well come…….inside???
You are “welcome” to make any comments.

New painting. Title : “Two Miles to Heaven and Hell is Not in Sight”
Maybe the Heaven and Hell series has just begun.
Guess this one does not look much like approaching heaven. But since I have not been there I do not know. Maybe it is approaching Jackson Pollock’s Heaven? All I know is this painting emerged and the title was presented to me. It may still change. My art is ALWAYS CHANGING. So keep posted and see what happens. (it just changed)
Don’t ask why I posted the following. Things can just burst forth. I believe in honoring and trusting our creative spirit…..the Divine within. Sometimes it may not seem to make sense at the moment (of creation) but it becomes clear over time. Some call it a hunch, gut reaction, intuition, Divine guidance, Higher Self. It does not matter. All that matters is you listen to and obey it. It will not harm anybody because it comes from a source of pure LOVE and therefore should be embraced. It knows only Truth and as it is said………the truth will set you free (it might just seem to take a while).
“Crisp as a doughnut. Small as a flea.
This painting tells you …….a lot about me.”
So I guess it could be called
” Two Miles to Heaven and Hell is Not in Sight – A Self Portrait”
But as someone once said….
What’s in a name? That which we call a painting
By any other name would still just look like paint. (Thanks Shakespeare)
Now back to the studio to find……. Heaven! (Hell is not in sight)

More reflections. This was part of a New York show I had in the nineties. I have continued to work in these formats (as well as others) but the works have changed a lot.
This side of my work is all about CHANGE and EVOLUTION. How things are always evolving into something else. How each part makes up the WHOLE while still maintaining it’s own integrity (greatness). Maybe a bit like how we fit into our community, country or world. We all make up the WHOLE. The Rowers shown recently is a newer work.
There is another side of my art which I am sharing mostly on my Pictify account. Link is http://pictify.com/user/Burgessart
This my fiery EMOTIONAL side where I allow instinctive raw emotions to express without censorship or editing. The squares are also the result of this energy but they are more focused, disciplined and contained.
Working in isolation has many benefits and has allowed me to explore lots of ideas and techniques etc. Also allowed me time for clarification and reflection for which I am most grateful.
Here is a larger image of the main painting shown above. It was 48 inches x 72 inches in size.

In this painting I have tried to blur the line between realism and abstraction. There are rowers and reflections. Movement across water and energy everywhere. Hope you can see the rowers but more importantly ….feel them rowing.
This painting is my entry in the 2012 Gainsborough Greens Art Awards
UPDATE : August 2012
This entry was not accepted to be included in the competition. In fact unlike last year where all my students and myself were included this year none of us were.
I find that a little bit weird. I was particularly upset for my students who had put forward several very fine works.
Local art competitions can be like that. I am not know in the local area and reminded that even The Impressionist were rejected by the French Academy when they tried to exhibit there.

Although my work can seem very different at times it is all related in some way. Still Life is a continuing concern for me… a bit like Cezanne. Discoveries are always made. I think Matisse and others are somewhere in there too. I pay homage to them all.
